Work from Home by Starting Your Own Translation Service

There are many reasons why people want to work from home. What ever the reason maybe, starting a home-based business is relatively easier and cheaper then starting a “normal” business in an office. We already talked about working from home and typical business ideas. In this article we want to add another idea that can be used to work from home.

More and more people are able to speak multiple languages these days. If you are such a person and can fluently speak or write in a foreign language, then you can start your own translation service.

The translation business could include:

  • Language translations
  • Technical translations
  • Document translations

Note: If you have a legal background you could also include legal document translations. If you also know the cultural difference between languages that you speak you can also do cultural translations. Also some technical knowledge is sometimes required if you want to do translations of technical documents.

If we look in more detail you could do translations of:

  • Software localization (for example the help file)
  • Letters, catalogues, etc
  • Technical manuals
  • Marketing materials, newsletters
  • Contracts and other legal documents
  • Etc.

The best thing to do is setup website with a portfolio that is full of examples of your previous work. It also wise to ask previous customers for a testimonial statement. These testimonials should be part of your portfolio and website.

Some general business tips for people who want to start a business and work from home:

  • Make sure that you have s source of income while starting your business, like a temporary part-time job. You never know when a business takes of and makes enough profit.
  • Make sure that you take the time to setup the business properly. Not only a nice website, but also a business plan and the right business systems in place.
  • Get informed about taxes, bookkeeping, local rules, and all other things you need to know to run a small business. Hire professionals if you don’t understand bookkeeping, taxes, etc.
