Freelance Writing some Pros and Cons

Freelance writing can be an absolute dream job and at other times freelance writing can be a complete nightmare. Making money as a freelancer has its own set of pros and cons.

Here are some of the pros and cons of freelance writing:

One of the great things of being a freelance writer is that you are your own boss. If you decide to take a break or go on a week’s vacation, you can do it. Of course you have to finish the projects you have started, but besides that, you can do whatever you want.

You are the boss! But to make it as a successful freelance writer you need a good mix of self-discipline, will and ambition.

Another great benefit of being a freelance writer is that you can potentially make as much money as you want. If you put in the work, the hours, you can make a lot. When you work at a job with a boss then the extra work and thus money will end up in the boss pocket. If you are a freelancer the extra money will end up in your wallet! All the things you do will benefit you.

A freelance writing job is for the dedicated and strong-willed person. It is very different from a “normal” 9 to 5 job. One of the biggest differences is that you are your own boss. Of course it has its benefits (see PROS list) but there is also a downside, you have to find your own work for instance. Finding new clients can be a hard task and can be frustrating. This means: no work, no pay.

Another downside can be that you have to set your own schedule (not everybody can do this.) There is no one who tells you to start working when you not feel like to. So you need a lot of self-discipline. There is also no one who tells you how long you have for a certain task (besides the client of course), you have to find out for yourself and this can mean you have to work much more hours if you make a mistake.

The hardest part of being a freelance writer (or a freelancer in general) is that you have to do everything yourself.

When you have the necessary skills, talent, passion, self-discipline, will and ambition, you can become a successful freelance writer and nothing should stand in your way.

I am freelancer for over 14 years. All the things you pointed out are VERY real.
I think that being a freelancer, it takes to have some explorer spirit. To bet your entire life on one card, it takes more that guts. It takes courage. Some people think courage is fearless. Dead wrong! The one who has courage, REAL courage, fears as much as any other human being. The great difference between those two categories, common people and brave ones, is that the courageous, CONTROL their fears. In other words, they just don’t give up, don’t sit their asses on a comfortable chair. They take the challenge. It’s more like a “win or die” game. Some people play that game with weapons, and become mercenaries. But some others, like freelancers for instance, accept challenges from Life itself. Can I be today better than I was yesterday?
I belive that is the question, the “engine” that drives a freelancer. And yes, a freelancer’s life is not a 9/5 sitting-lazy-in-a-chair, or “the land of milk and honey”.
For me to give an example, living in Romania, where laws change sometimes monthly, it wasn’t easy at all and still isn’t. But some people get born very “stubborn”, and no matter how hard they hit the ground, they rise and go on.
Maybe that’s why I like very much this:
“What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger!”
    All the best,
