If you do a search on the internet then you will find many eBay business success stories from people who make money online with eBay. If you have read some of them, you may think that running an eBay business is going to be easy! But you have to remember that for every success story, there are actually hundreds (maybe thousands) of failures.

The eBay marketplace isn’t a place where people can get rich quick. If you expect fast and easy profits then you will be disappointed. As with every other business an eBay business has to be build properly. You have to put in the time, money and hard effort to build a solid business. Only if you put in these ingredients you’ll make money online.

Ask Yourself some Questions
There are a number of questions that you have to ask yourself before getting into eBay selling.

  • How much capital do I need?
  • Do I have enough capital for inventory investment, marketing expenses and unforseen expenses?
  • Do I have enough time to build on my eBay business?
  • Do I posses enough drive to keep going in the long run?
  • Will I make enough money online to cover my expenses and make a profit?
  • How much will my marketing campaign going to cost?

As you can see the type of question doesn’t differ from questions you should ask yourself if you start a “normal” business. Maybe you should think about writing a business plan! (Note: this doesn’t have to be a formal business plan, writing some ideas on a small piece of paper can be enough.)

As with every business, you need money to make money. You don’t only need money for your initial inventory, but also for you marketing campaign. If you don’t have any savings, maybe you can start by selling some unwanted items from your home to get some capital. Another way is using drop shipping wholesalers, this way you don’t need money to invest in an inventory.

Marketing Campaign
Many people search on eBay for products, but this doesn’t mean you can’t drive traffic to your eBay products. You can use Pay Per Click advertising to drive traffic or all kinds of other methods. For instance: using a blog to write about your products with links in the articles to your eBay product pages. Another way is setting up your own affiliate network (other people who will drive traffic to your product pages for commission so you can make money online.)

Time Management
You don’t have to work on your eBay business full time. It is better if you can, but you still have to make a living, so working part-time on your business is not a bad idea. You can start by working part-time on your eBay business, for instance after your normal working hours or in the weekends. To make this into a success you need to have steady hours that you work on your eBay business building (For instance: every Saturday for 8 hours.)

You also must try to automate as much as possible, this will save you a lot of time.
